World Hypertension Day 2022: Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control it, Live Longer.

Hypertension is referred to as high or raised blood pressure. Blood pressure is the force exerted by circulating blood against the walls of the arteries.

A blood pressure reading is given in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). It has two numbers

  1. Systolic (top) measures pressure when the heartbeats

  2. Diastolic (bottom) measures pressure in arteries when they beat.

The Risk Factors of Hypertension are:

  1. Age

  2. Gender

  3. Stress

  4. Obesity

  5. Family history

  6. High sodium intake

  7. Alcohol and smoking

  8. A sedentary lifestyle

  9. Metabolic diseases

Symptoms of Hypertension

  1. Profuse sweating

  2. Fatigue

  3. Anxiety

  4. Sleep disturbance

  5. Headaches

  6. Shortness of breath

  7. Chest pain

Diagnosis of Hypertension

Hypertension is diagnosed by doing a routine blood pressure check for a few days or weeks. It is rarely diagnosed after just one reading. Healthy blood pressure is 120 systolic reading and 80 diastolic reading.

Untreated high blood pressure can lead to:

  1. Vision problems

  2. Heart attack

  3. Stroke

  4. Kidney failure

  5. Heart failure

Management of Hypertension;

  1. Eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.

  2. Engage in moderate-intensity exercises for at least 150minutes per week.

  3. Stress management

  4. Maintain optimal weight

  5. Quit smoking/ alcohol intake.

  6. Reduce processed, canned, and packaged food intake as they contain high amounts of sodium

  7. Eat healthy fats from nuts, seeds, plant oil, etc.

  8. Monitor blood pressure regularly.
