World Food Safety Day - Safer Food, Better Health

One in ten people worldwide falls ill from contaminated food each year [WHO].

Food safety involves preventive practices at any point of food-related operations such as receiving, storing, processing, handling, and distributing. It ensures that all operation steps will not have any food safety hazards and that a company is delivering safe food to consumers. Food safety plays an important role in ensuring that contaminants that can cause food-borne illnesses are not present in food. It ensures the health and safety of consumers are protected from any food-related issues.

The four main principles of food safety are to

  1. Clean

  2. Chill

  3. Store

  4. Cook food properly to control food safety hazards.

Take action by:

  1. Maintaining cleanliness and personal hygiene

  2. Properly cooking food to the correct internal temperature

  3. Storing foods at a safe temperature (refrigerated temperatures or hot-holding)

  4. Keeping raw and cooked foods separate

  5. Ensure clean raw materials.

Safe food is essential to health and wellbeing as that’s when the nutritional value can be beneficial.
