MEAL TIMES FOR CHILDREN

Christyn Gobina

Some Feeding Guidelines for Children are:

  • Discourage unacceptable behaviours like standing at the table or throwing food

  • Let toddlers explore and enjoy food, even if it means eating with their fingers for a while. They will learn to use a spoon.

  • Don’t force foods on children as rejecting new foods is normal and acceptance is more likely as they become familiar with new foods with repeated opportunities to taste them.

  • Provide nutritious foods and let children choose which ones and how much they’ll eat. They will gradually acquire the taste of different foods.

  • Limit sweets as infants and young children have little room for empty kilo-calorie foods in their daily energy allowance.

  • Don’t turn dining tea into a battleground. Make mealtimes enjoyable. And teach healthy food choices and eating habits in a pleasant manner.
