Pneumonia is a lung infection. It is usually caused by a virus or bacteria. These germs make the air sacs in the lungs fill with fluid (phlegm or mucous). This makes it hard to breathe and causes a child to cough.

• Child with asthma

• Infant born prematurely

• Child with a compromised immune system.

Signs and Symptoms

• Fast and difficult breathing

• Nausea or vomiting

Diagnosis

• Blood and other tests may be done.

Preventing Pneumonia

• Teach child good hand washing habits

• Keep vaccination up to date.

• Teach child to cover nose and mouth when sneezing

• Wash surfaces that are touched often with soap and water or wipe them with disinfectant
