DEALING WITH CONSTIPATION IN CHILDREN

Constipation is when a child has very hard stools and has fewer bowel movements than normal. It is a very common GI (gastrointestinal) problem.


Causes

• Withholding/ ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement

• Toilet training issues

• Changes in diet

• Changes in routine

• Medications

• Medical conditions.


Risk Factors

• Sedentary life

• Not eating enough fibre in foods

• Certain medications

• A medical condition affecting the anus/rectum

• A neurological disorder


Symptoms

• Less than three bowel movements a week

• Bowel movements that are hard, dry and difficult to pass

• Pain while having a bowel movement

• Stomach pain

• Traces of liquid or pasty stool in the child's underwear


Tips

• Give child enough fluids

• Offer child high-fibre foods

• Promote physical activity

• Remind child to heed to nature's call

• Create a routine for child

• Calm and re-assure child.
