Christyn Gobina

Cracked nipples are characterized by red, irritated and scanned skin on or around the nipple. About 38% of breastfeeding mothers experience this and it makes breastfeeding uncomfortable.

Causes of Sore/ Cracked Nipple

During breastfeeding, the causes include:

  1. Poor latching

  2. Improper breastfeeding position

  5. milk or some skin that is overgrown a milk duct and blocked it.

  6. Tongue-tie: This is when the baby’s tongue cannot reach past the lower lip when crying or the tongue looks heart-shaped. This prevents a proper latch, causing soreness.

  7. Wearing tight bra can put pressure on the nipple. Thereby, causing irritation.

  8. Vasospasm: This is a painful sensation that occurs after a breastfeeding session due to

  9. construction of blood vessels. The pain usually extends from the nipple into the breast.

  10. Mastitis: This is a breast infection that happens when a blocked milk duct prevents breastmilk flow. The milk builds up, causing pain and swelling in the breast and nipple.

  11. Thrush Infection: This is a contagious yeast infection that affects the nipple, and caulking soreness. A white or yellowish in the baby’s mouth or lips or cracked skin at the corners of the mouth is an indication.
