4 M’s to Lower Your Risk of GD

Christyn Gobina

GD is medically known as Gestational Diabetes, which is a type of diabetes that can occur during pregnancy. If you have GD, it means you have higher blood sugar levels than normal during pregnancy.

It is not always possible to prevent it, but a pregnant woman can take steps to reduce her risk.

  1. Maintain a healthy weight before you get pregnant. Research confirms that having a BMI higher than 25 increases your risk of developing GD.

  2. Make healthy food choices. Eat more lean proteins, complex carbs, fiber and limit your intake of refined sugar, processed and junk foods.

  3. Move your body. Physical activities and exercise play a key role in maintaining a healthy weight both before and during pregnancy

  4. Meet with a dietitian. If you’ve had gestational diabetes during a previous pregnancy or you’re overweight and you’re planning to become pregnant, talk to a dietitian. They will consult with you to identify your risk factors and ensure you have a healthy pregnancy.
